An example of a search box

The search box is the portion of the Monobook skin in which users can search in content to find and view pages. The search box is primarily located within the Monbook sidebar; in the default sidebar, the search box is located under the 'community' box and above the 'toolbox'. While some wikis choose to do so, through css, the search box can be moved to other places, typically in the top-right corner of the page.

Customizing the search box Edit

The search box section of the sidebar is notified by a 'search' header that cannot be changed via MediaWiki:Sidebar. However, the search box location can be changed by way of MediaWiki:Sidebar by using * SEARCH as a line on the page. The search box's heading can be named a different name by using MediaWiki:Search.

The section of the sidebar that contains the search box can be customized by way of editing the rest of the sidebar.

Search buttons Edit

In addition to editing the search box, there are two buttons for functionality of the search box. The "Go" button, upon clicked, will take the user directly to the page. A user typing the "Enter" key on their keyboard should also get this result. The "Search" button of the search box will take the user to the search results page of the text they posted in the search box. These buttons can be customized to fit the rest of the theme as well. The following code can be used to colorize the buttons, however, the <colorhex> variables must be filled in with an appropriate color:

input.searchButton: hover {
	color: #<colorhex>;
	background-color: #<colorhex>;
	-moz-box-shadow: 0 0 2px #<colorhex>;
	-webkit-box-shadow: 0 0 2px #<colorhex>;
	-o-box-shadow: 0 0 2px #<colorhex>;
	-ms-box-shadow: 0 0 2px #<colorhex>;
	box-shadow: 0 0 2px #<colorhex>;
}

input.goButton: hover {
	color: #<colorhex>;
	background-color: #<colorhex>;
	-moz-box-shadow: 0 0 2px #<colorhex>;
	-webkit-box-shadow: 0 0 2px #<colorhex>;
	-o-box-shadow: 0 0 2px #<colorhex>;
	-ms-box-shadow: 0 0 2px #<colorhex>;
	box-shadow: 0 0 2px #<colorhex>;
}

#searchGoButton {
	color: #<colorhex>;
	background-color: #<colorhex>;
}

#searchSearchButton {
	color: #<colorhex>;
	background-color: #<colorhex>;
}
